This was my favourite growing up because I always heard it sung by a large group of children.
I pledge my heart forvever
To serve with humble pride
This shining homeland ever
So long as earth abide.
I pledge my heart this island
As God and faith shall live,
My work, my strength, my love
And my loyalty to give.
O green isle of the Indies,
Jamaica strong and free!
Our vows and loyal promises,
O heartland, are to thee.
We need to get back to emphasising these for the younger ones so that they will care and as a reminder to the older ones. I lived in the States as a youngster, and every friggin morning I had to stand and face the flag and say the pledge. They ooze nationalism. They may bad-mouth their country but you can't, and they won't leave it; even with Bush in charge. Even the junkie on the street, the illegal immigrant hiding out from INS is brainwashed to love that country. When you take the citizens test you promise to forsake all other countries for it.
If we had even a part of that national pride here. It's funny, they have tonnes of corruption. They just keep their secrets better.

Ok, unnu need fi stap read mi mind!!! Hayden, I sing that song in the lab everyday that my eyes are focussed on the minute dots in the microscope (also because it sits well with my voice and emphasizes my Jamaicaness). I agree with you wholeheartedly and I think my patriotism now is a direct result of my experiences as a child.
The people at the top need to start taking those words seriously...then the others below will see and maybe, just maybe try to emulate. This is not to say that on their own the lay man should not take these words seriously, but it makes it easier if those at the helm shape up their act.
We are all waiting for the man at the top to shape up and lead by example and in the past 30 years it has not happened and things have got worse. What are we waiting for to realise that we have to lead by our own example?
The leaders come from our midst and are supposed to serve the people. If we the ppl don't lead then from our midst will come more clowns. When we start doing better then the current leaders will have to come better. Politicians need ppl. Ppl don't need politicians.
