Canadian mounted
Canada has said that they granted citizenship to ~266,000 immigrants in the last year and hope to increase that number to 300,000 per year by 2010.
It is no secret that the Canadian population (like France) is an ageing one. They are also a very sedate set of people. It's too cold there to want to do anything much. They are larger than the United States and have 1/10th the population (much land in constant winter conditions). Like the UK, prejudice is covert (unlike the US which is overt). Basically they want trained people to ensure that their country continues to maintain the sort of standard that they have built over the years.
The problem is that their young people are leaving for more exciting lives in the US and other places. Another problem which faces the pursuant citizen is that they have qualification exams for just about every occupation. You have to prove that you are qualified to work in their system despite your big shot status in your home country. For most of those occupations you have no opportunity to work in that field while you wait to sit the board exams. So you will drive taxi, pack groceries and do other such jobs until you get through those exams. In some specialty fields you have to be working in the system in order to sit the exams....... If they won't allow you to work in the area, and they won't let you sit the exam unless you have worked for a number of years in that area, then you won't be working in that area!! Simple!!
All in all it is an excellent opportunity but has its negatives. Let common sense prevail in weighing everything you do, including migrating. No sense in leaving here to be unhappy there and too shame to come back. Don't laugh.... it happens!!

not to mention unhappy and freezing you tukus off.
Funny you should bring this up. I know someone that's going thru that very situation now; went to Canada with high hopes, still unemployed after many months, very ashamed to come back but has to because she's out of time. Sad.
Best regards from NY!
