In idleness

I came across this description of us on the net.

Background: Jamaica gained full independence within the British Commonwealth in 1962. Deteriorating economic conditions during the 1970s led to recurrent violence and a drop off in tourism. Elections in 1980 saw the democratic socialists voted out of office. Political violence marred elections during the 1990s. I'm so proud! Sniff sniff

Environment - current issues: heavy rates of deforestation; coastal waters polluted by industrial waste, sewage, and oil spills; damage to coral reefs; air pollution in Kingston results from vehicle emissions. Where is NEPA?

Environment - international agreements: party to: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Climate Change-Kyoto Protocol, Desertification, Endangered Species, Hazardous Wastes, Law of the Sea, Marine Dumping, Marine Life Conservation, Ozone Layer Protection, Ship Pollution, Wetlands
signed, but not ratified: none of the selected agreements

Age structure: 0-14 years: 27.5% (male 385,099/female 367,398)

65 years and over: 6.9% (male 83,632/female 104,241) (2005 est.)

Sex ratio: at birth: 1.05 male(s)/female
under 15 years: 1.05 male(s)/female
15-64 years: 1.01 male(s)/female
65 years and over: 0.8 male(s)/female For those looking husbands, we out-number you in the age bracket that counts
total population: 1 male(s)/female (2005 est.)

Life expectancy at birth: total population: 76.29 years
male: 74.23 years
female: 78.45 years (2005 est.) Just 4 yrs? Ladies come on, you slowing down!

Electricity - production: 6.289 billion kWh (2002) (Seeker is this true?)

Disputes - international: none (cockroach don't business in fowl fight)

Illicit drugs: major transshipment point for cocaine from South America to North America and Europe; illicit cultivation of cannabis; government has an active manual cannabis eradication program; corruption is a major concern; substantial money-laundering activity; Colombian narcotics traffickers favor Jamaica for illicit financial transactions.
(They're on to us!!!)

Exports: $1.679 billion f.o.b. (2004 est.)

Imports: $3.624 billion f.o.b. (2004 est.)

Current account balance:
$-830.7 million (2004 est.) (I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go....The math seems a little off)

Debt - external: $5.964 billion (2004 est.) (ahhhh. That sems more like it!!)

Exchange rates: Jamaican dollars per US dollar - 61.197 (2004), 57.741 (2003), 48.416 (2002), 45.996 (2001), 42.986 (2000) (It keeps climbing and climbing and ........)

And finally

Oil - production: 0 bbl/day (2001 est.)

Oil - exports: NA

Oil - consumption: 66,000 bbl/day (2001 est.)

Oil - imports: NA (....................................WHAT??? So where the oil coming from.....Seeker's back?!

I was with them until this point. Now I have to question everything else they have stated.

Yeah but Rae, some of the female population enjoy the company of themselves too, so it ballances out... or worsens.

Oily-back Seeker- LOL!!!

Does NA in this case mean 'not applicable' or 'not available'?

umm, personally I have a problem with the 15 - 64 range, a little too wide for my tastes. :-) Need subdivisions of that 65.6%.

No Comment BB or CB.

But Our capacity in total is greater than that( inclusive of PPCs), that figure they gave is approximately JPS by itself, the PPC's add over a hundred Megawats.

And I see that you are an integral part of the production process. Shouldn't your capacity been put under natural resources at least even if not under oil production?

Seeker: don't mind them. Your oily back will come in useful one day.

Interesting stuff BB.
